Type 2 Diabetes Prevention & Treatment
Seattle Performance Medicine works as a partner with both Pre-Diabetes patients and those who already have a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes have a strong genetic component and can be triggered by environmental factors in genetically vulnerable individuals.
In 2005, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) labeled Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes as epidemic conditions in the United States. We have not curbed the incidence of Diabetes and current projections suggest that by 2020, as many as 60% of the adult US population will be affected by either Pre-Diabetes or full blown Diabetes. At SPM, we take this very seriously and work diligently to both prevent and reduce the severity of existing Diabetes.
Our approach involves a thorough analysis of metabolic function and derangement which is usually present in patients with Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes. We then develop a treatment program that targets areas of imbalance and malfunction to re-harness the body’s potential for normalizing its metabolic function. We incorporate appropriate pharmacology, adjusting medications to achieve the best outcome (many meds for cholesterol, blood pressure and depression can interfere with Diabetes genetics), we view exercise and nutrition as medicine and we recommend a non-diet approach.
In over 20 years in practice Dr. Cooper has never had a patient who was at risk for Diabetes, develop Diabetes. She believes that Diabetes is completely preventable and that some cases of Diabetes are still reversible.
